DIABETIES
What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a condition in which the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood is too high because the body cannot use it properly. Glucose comes from the digestion of starchy foods such as bread, rice, potatoes, chapatis, yams and plantain, from sugar and other sweet foods, and from the liver which makes glucose.
There are two forms of diabetes classified as Type 1 and Type 2. Diabetes is where the pancreas produces insufficient insulin. Diabetes is one of the most common diseases in the Western world affecting over 5% of the population. |

TYPE 1: |
Occurs when the pancreas produces too little insulin or none at all. Usually develops in childhood or adolescence, must be treated with insulin injections. Main cause is abnormal reaction of the immune system. |
 |
TYPE 2: |
More common, generally affects people over the age of 40, more prevalent in over-weight people. Usually develops slowly going unnoticed for years in some cases, treatment varies between diet control and tablets. Main cause is lifestyle related. |
All diabetics run a far higher risk of cardio-vascular disease and associated circulatory problems including leg ulcers.
